One of the main functions of our Qigong or Tai Chi practice is to increase the qualities of the body, mind and spirit so that a connected efficiency and transformation can occur within them.
So often in Qigong and Tai Chi, we learn an exercise set or a form and when the teacher comes along and tells you that you have finally got it, the student will shorty after stop practising or move onto the next set. Some will completely discontinue with the practice mistakenly or arrogantly thinking that they have mastered it. Unfortunately I have witness this so many times with students.
For many people one of the issues with the above arts is that to figure out just one exercise proficiently could take one, two or maybe even three years if they are only coming to class once a week with no practice in-between. I understand this might be concerning and put people off, which is definitely not my aim as they will be coming to class for various reasons and for some it might not necessary be for the art. This is of course fine and I'm happy to teach all comers, I'm just highlighting the deeper side of the practice in which much pleasure comes from the journey, especially as there is no end goal to conquer.
When we learn the form within Tai Chi or a Qigong movement this is only the very beginning of what the awareness of that movement can offer. Only by the nature of repetition can we familiarise ourselves enough so that the awareness can increase enough to produce the deeper qualities which arise or transform accordingly. The practice is the door that opens to the potential rising of the qualities so that the true art can be realised and the treasures can be discovered.
Sadly most modern folk, normally due to their hectic lifestyles don’t have the capacity or time to be this patient and either get bored or disillusioned by not recognise the subtle processes that are taking place so predictably throw in the towel to early. There is no quick path, actually saying that there might be some slightly quicker paths but the quicker paths are still very slow in normal perception of time for a transformation to happen.
In today's fast pace society this maybe seen as a negative, but without the slow you will never discover the qualities in the first place, so no transformation. One of the many hidden secrets of Qigong and Tai Chi, of which there are many, you couldn't go far wrong in spending a large portion of time dedicated to getting the foundations as correct as you can, after all there is never any satisfaction, fulfilment or growth when things come quick and easy.
